Description
For the first time, a unique book shows us the essence of the amazing world of markets. The book travels through markets from all corners of the Earth: urban markets, roadside markets, rural markets … and their feverish intensity is reflected in the spectacular photos contained in the book.
In my travels, I have wanted to capture the beauty of traditional markets, the colours and smells, the variety of races and ways of life, the customs and the daily rituals. Sergi Ramis, another great traveller and expert on traditional markets, is the author of the texts.
Awards
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards awarded the third prize of the competition «The best World Foreign Cookery book 2009» to the book «Markets of the world». It is the only international competition that awards the best books published in the course of the year of food and drink.
“When I travel, I never miss visiting the traditional markets of the countries I visit because it is there where I discover the life of the locals. I have travelled halfway around the world, and I have always paid special attention to these areas of daily life, which usually go unnoticed in the eyes of tourists”.
Content and Structure
With more than 300 photos, «Markets of the world» immerses the reader into the life and human activities generated in the markets and in their surroundings, making a tour all around the world, from the most remote point on the Earth’s surface to the most visited. In this book, the reader would be able to get to know in detail the smells, colours, rituals and customs that characterize the markets around the world.
The book is organized into three sections:
Chapter 1. The market, a meeting point
This section shows the places where markets are located: roadsides, rivers, suburbs, squares. The physical space is not important, although over time it acquires its own personality, and is established, since ancient times, in the same place.
Chapter 2. Intersecting lives
The content of this second chapter is dominated by people who go to the market with the excuse of buying and selling, using the opportunity to bond with each other, visiting friends or escaping from arduous agricultural tasks.
Chapter 3. The feast of the senses
The last part shows the main products subject of trade from the most basic (corn, rice, meats, fish, etc.) to more elaborate ones (clothes, hats, etc.) with images of the specific process of production in each case, such as rice fields, corn fields and the fishermen in their natural environment. These products are the engine that drives the markets.
The Media’s Opinion
‘Clicks’ to the market stalls
A book covers through more than 300 images the traditional markets of half the world.
Jordi Llorens says that, above all, he fits the label of traveller. Photographer too, but fundamentally he recognizes himself better in the art of covering many miles with eyes wide open. More than twenty years carrying a backpack and a passport with stamps from more than 100 countries give a certificate of authenticity to his self-portrait. He never forgets the camera at home. […] And there, where he goes, he looks for a traditional market […].
[…] “The market has always attracted my attention. After arriving, I can spend hours sitting in a corner, without disturbing, unhurried, looking at the market stalls and the people in their coming and going. If I see something I like, I shoot the camera, I hide it, I take it out again ….” Llorens has been doing this discreet gesture long enough to accumulate graphic material for a book, which has just been published under the title «Markets of the world».
With more than 300 images by Jordi Llorens, a member of the Spanish Geographic Society, and text by Sergi Ramis, «Markets of the world» immerses the reader into the life and human activities generated in the markets and in their surroundings, making a tour all around the world, from the most remote point on the Earth’s surface to the most visited.

For taking the true pulse of life at any place, it is essential to visit in situ some of its markets. In these areas of daily life is appreciated the human wealth, the traditions and idiosyncrasies of a people. This book is a tour through the markets of different parts of the world: urban markets, roadside markets, […]. In his travels across the five continents, the photographer Jordi Llorens has captured the beauty of these crossing points and meeting places. […] A book that allows you to discover the world from its very bowels.
